Is Nami Island Worth it in Winter? A Muslim Traveler's Perspective

Nami Island is cold and windy in winter, but for Muslim travellers it is still one of the easiest day trips in Korea: a prayer room, halal-certified dining, snowy tree-lined paths and a simple link to Vivaldi Park or Elysian Gangchon.

Nami Island is one of the most popular day trips from Seoul. In winter it is also very cold: the wind off the river cuts straight through a thin jacket. So is it worth going? For Muslim travellers, our answer is yes, because it is one of the most Muslim-friendly sightseeing spots in Korea and it fits neatly into a ski trip.

Facilities for Muslim visitors

Nami Island has made a real effort for Muslim guests. There is a dedicated prayer room for visitors, and restaurants on the island have offered halal-certified dishes, including the Asian restaurant Dongmoon, which past guides list as serving dishes certified by the Korea Muslim Federation. Facilities and certification can change, so ask at the information center when you arrive where the prayer room is this season and which restaurants are currently certified. Look for the certificate at the restaurant counter before you order.

The winter scenery

The island's famous tree-lined avenues, especially the metasequoia lane, look their best under snow, and fans of the drama Winter Sonata will recognise the setting. The island also decorates for winter with snowman sculptures and seasonal displays that children love. Dress for the wind: thermal layers, a windproof jacket, gloves, a hat and two pairs of socks.

Combining it with a ski resort

Nami Island lies on the way from Seoul to Vivaldi Park and Elysian Gangchon, so it is easy to visit on the day you travel to the snow. A relaxed plan looks like this:

TimePlan
09:00Leave Seoul
10:30Arrive at Nami Island: walk and photos
12:30Lunch at a certified halal restaurant
13:30Dhuhr prayer at the prayer room
14:30Transfer to the ski resort
15:30Check in, then rest or try night skiing

Ferry times, admission and transport change by season, so check the island's official information before you go. If you are using a tour or shuttle, confirm that it allows enough time for lunch and prayer.

Our verdict

If you only want to see snow, go straight to a ski resort. If you want halal food, a proper place to pray and beautiful winter photos in one easy day, Nami Island is hard to beat. For more, see the halal food guide for Vivaldi Park and Nami Island and the Muslim-friendly 5-day itinerary.
