The three Pyeongchang ski resorts that hosted the 2018 Winter Olympics, compared: slopes, night skiing, KTX stations and shuttles, and where to eat in Hoenggye and Bongpyeong.
Pyeongchang County holds the three resorts that became the 2018 Olympic snow venues: Mona Yongpyong, the biggest in the area; Alpensia next door, small and quiet; and Phoenix Park over in Bongpyeong. The KTX Gangneung line stops at Jinbu and Pyeongchang stations, so even a day trip from Seoul by train works.
How the three resorts differ: Mona Yongpyong is the centre of gravity: 28 slopes, 14 lifts and Korea's longest cable car (3.7 km). Experts head for the Rainbow zone, intermediates for the long Gold and Silver runs. Alpensia is small — six slopes from a 700 m base, the longest being Bravo at 1,351 m — which makes it quiet and easy for families and beginners. Phoenix Park has 18 slopes, the 2.4 km Panorama run from the 1,050 m Mont Blanc summit, an eight-seat gondola, and "white night" skiing until 02:00.
Night skiing: In 2025-26 Yongpyong ran night sessions 19:00–23:00, and Alpensia 18:30–21:30 in peak season only (December 20 to February 17). Phoenix runs night 18:30–22:30, then midnight (21:30–00:00) and white-night (23:30–02:00) sessions. Yongpyong's Rainbow zone closes at 16:00, so go there first.
Getting there: From KTX Jinbu, Yongpyong and Alpensia are about 20 minutes by taxi, and both run a twice-daily shuttle for their guests and customers. Phoenix is closest to Pyeongchang Station. From Seoul, Daewon runs ski shuttles; from Incheon Airport there is the Yongpyong airport shuttle (December 7, 2026 to February 12, 2027) and the Gangwon Yeogaek limousine to Alpensia (₩34,500 from Incheon). An intercity bus from Dong Seoul to Hoenggye takes about 2 hours 30 minutes.
Which of the three is best? Yongpyong has the most and most varied terrain. Alpensia suits quiet family days; Phoenix suits people who want to ski late into the night.
Can one pass cover several of them? The 2026-27 X6+ Season Pass covers Yongpyong and Alpensia among its six resorts. Phoenix is not included.
