Best Ski Resorts Outside Seoul: Is the Trip to Gangwon Worth It?

Mona Yongpyong, High1 and Phoenix Park: what each big Gangwon resort offers, how long it takes to get there, and why a transport-and-lodging package beats a DIY trip.

So you're willing to travel. You want the real mountains: the Olympic slopes, the deeper snow and the resort-village vibe. Leaving the Seoul bubble is the best decision you can make. The skiing jumps from "meh" to genuinely great.

But getting to Gangwon Province can feel daunting. KTX? Shuttle? Taxi? Here is where you should go, and the easiest way to book the trip.

1. Mona Yongpyong (The Legend)

  • Distance: Roughly 2.5 to 3 hours from Seoul by road.
  • The Vibe: Mona Yongpyong (formerly Yongpyong Resort) is where Winter Sonata was filmed and where the 2018 Olympic alpine technical races were held. It is massive.
  • Why go: 28 slopes, with a top-to-bottom run from Dragon Peak of around 5.6 km. This is a proper mountain.
  • The Logistics: The KTX Gangneung Line gets you from Seoul to Jinbu Station, but you still need a shuttle or taxi to the resort.
  • The Smart Move: Look at overnight packages that bundle transport, a stay at the Dragon Valley Hotel or the resort condos, and lift tickets. Compare the bundle with booking the room and the lift tickets separately; it's often cheaper and always simpler.

2. High1 Resort (The Snow King)

  • Distance: Roughly 3 to 3.5 hours.
  • The Vibe: High altitude, premium, slightly flashy (there's a casino).
  • Why go: In our view, the most consistent snow in Korea.
  • The Logistics: It is far. Driving is exhausting. Public transport is tricky.
  • The Smart Move: A ski bus or bus-plus-lodging package makes High1 easy. You doze on the bus, arrive fresh, ski for two days, and sleep on the way back.

3. Phoenix Park (The Freestyle Hub)

  • Distance: About 2 hours.
  • The Vibe: Young, energetic, snowboard-focused. Phoenix Snow Park (often still called Phoenix Park) hosted the freestyle skiing and snowboard events at the 2018 Olympics.
  • Why go: If you want to hit jumps or ride the halfpipe.
  • The Smart Move: Phoenix has condo-style rooms that sleep a group, which is the best value when there are four to six of you. Check online for room-plus-lift bundles, which usually beat buying each part separately.

Summary: Don't DIY the Long Trips

Trying to coordinate a KTX train, a local taxi, a hotel check-in and a rental shop in rural Gangwon-do (where English is rare) is a recipe for stress. A package deal is not just for lazy people. It is the most efficient, cost-effective way to reach the big mountains. Staying a night or two? Read our Korea ski accommodation guide.
