Korean resorts almost always have snow thanks to snowmaking, but natural snow is another story. How Mona Yongpyong, High1 and the resorts near Seoul compare for real powder.
"Will there be snow?"
This is the wrong question for Korea. The answer is almost always "yes", because every major resort runs serious snowmaking.
The real question is: "Will there be natural snow, or am I skiing on an ice rink?"
Snow reliability in Korea depends heavily on geography. Some resorts sit in a "snow pocket" that catches winter storms. Others sit in dry valleys and rely almost entirely on machines. Here is where to go to improve your odds of powder.
1. Mona Yongpyong (The Snow Magnet)
- Location: The Daegwallyeong area of Pyeongchang.
- The Science: This highland is legendary for snow. Moist air coming off the East Sea gets pushed up against the mountains and dumps here.
- Reliability: 9/10. Even in a bad year, Mona Yongpyong usually gets some natural snow. In a good year, it gets a lot.
- Han's Take: If you are booking months in advance and are terrified of a "brown winter", book Mona Yongpyong. It is the safest bet.
2. High1 (The Freezer)
- Location: High altitude, with its top station at around 1,340 m.
- The Science: It might not get as much volume as Yongpyong, but it keeps what it gets. It is often noticeably colder than resorts nearer Seoul.
- Reliability: 8/10. The snow quality is often more consistent because it doesn't melt and refreeze as much. Details on the High1 page.
3. The "Seoul Cluster" (Vivaldi, Jisan, Konjiam)
- Location: Low altitude, inland.
- The Science: These resorts rely almost entirely on snowmaking.
- Reliability: 10/10 for coverage (they will almost always be open once the season starts), but 2/10 for natural snow. You are skiing on man-made hardpack.
- Han's Take: Don't expect a winter wonderland. Expect a very efficient outdoor gym.
