Not everyone in the group wants to ski. Korean resorts are built for that: indoor water parks, sightseeing cable cars, sledding parks and a sheep farm in the snow near Pyeongchang.
Your family wants to ski, but you dislike the cold and have no wish to slide downhill on two planks. You don't have to spend the trip in the hotel room. Most big Korean resorts are integrated resorts with hotels, condos, spas and entertainment around the slopes, and they plan for guests who never put on a pair of skis.
Several resorts run large water parks with indoor pools, slides and warm outdoor baths. Alpensia has Ocean 700 and Vivaldi Park has Ocean World. Sitting in warm water outdoors while snow falls is a very Korean winter pleasure. Winter opening days and which zones run vary by season, so check the water park's own schedule before you plan a day around it.
You don't need skis to ride to the top. At Yongpyong, the Balwangsan sightseeing cable car runs 3.7 km to a 1,458 m summit in about 18 minutes. The resort lists a round trip at ₩27,000 for adults. At the top there is the Balwangsan Sky Walk, an observation deck, and a short trail through old yew trees. On cold, clear mornings the summit trees are often coated in frost, which makes for some of the best photos of the trip. High1 also has gondolas that sightseers can use; check which ones are open to non-skiers on the day.
Many resorts set aside an area for sledding and tubing, separate from the ski runs. Vivaldi Park's Snowy Land is the best known, a dedicated snow play park with tube slides and other rides. It is fun for adults as well as children, and you can see it all without any lessons.
Near Yongpyong and Alpensia, the Daegwallyeong area is known for its hillside sheep farms. In winter the pastures are under snow and visitors walk the fence-line trail and feed the sheep hay. With the rolling white hills it looks a lot like the Alps. Winter hours are short, so go in the middle of the day.
Ride the cable car in the morning, have lunch in the base village, then spend the afternoon at the water park or sledding hill while the skiers finish their runs. You may end up with the best photos of the trip. For a full plan, see the 7-day Korea winter itinerary, and if you're travelling with children, our guide to skiing in Korea with kids.
