Real Snow Conditions vs. Marketing Photos: Managing Expectations

The brochure shows chest-deep powder in a silent forest. The reality is fast groomed snow under floodlights. Four common marketing myths, and how to plan around what Korea is actually good at.

The brochure shows a skier bursting through chest-deep powder in a silent forest. On the day, you are more likely to be carving firm, groomed snow under floodlights with plenty of company. Korean skiing is a lot of fun, but its marketing photos set the wrong expectations. Here is what the pictures leave out.

Powder days are rare

Deep, untracked powder does happen in Korea, usually after a big storm at the higher Gangwon resorts, but it is a handful of days a season at best, and off-piste skiing is prohibited at almost every resort. What Korea does well is grooming. The runs are packed, firm and fast, which makes it a good place to work on carving. Bring or rent stiff, sharp skis built for hard snow, not wide powder skis.

The slopes are rarely empty

The photo shows one person alone on a wide run. On a Saturday afternoon, the same run is busy from top to bottom. Empty slopes do exist if you pick your moment: weekday mornings, the first lifts of the day, and the start of the evening session while many people are still at dinner. Our crowds guide and weekend vs weekday breakdown go into detail.

The trees may not be white

In the photos, every tree is frosted. In reality, snowmaking covers the runs, and if there has been no natural snowfall for a while, the forest beside them can be brown or green. A white ribbon between bare hillsides looks odd at first, but the skiing on it can still be good.

"Ski-in, ski-out" usually means a short walk

The marketing suggests you step out of your door onto the snow. At most resorts you will walk through a lobby, take an escalator or lift, cross a plaza and then reach the slope. It is close and convenient, just rarely door-to-snow.

Come for what Korea does best

Adjust your expectations and you won't be disappointed. Come for fast groomers, night skiing, easy access from Seoul and resorts where food, rental and lodging are all in one place. Don't come expecting backcountry solitude. Before you book, check the live cameras to see what the runs look like right now, and read our guide to reading snow cams so you know what you are looking at.
